Exactly, Rob, that was my point too. Any language you know extra is an advantage.

It is always good to speak more than one language.

In Europa, if you speak English, you can talk to many people in many different countries.  So it may not be a "need" but it can be a real advantage, in my opinion.

Of courserse thew's tree wold languages, English Spanish and Portuguese Russian is not even close

I just answered the discussion by "reductio ad absurdum" of offering the completely absurdly opposite counter-question.  
Of course, mother's language is always remaining the most important. But if you ask "Is there a need...", then of course there is a need for Latvians [or place any other nationality] to learn English [or place any other foreign language].

I never said that there was no need for Latvians not to learn English..... In fact i am trying to initiate a discussion where in people should show and express the importance of knowing English language as a important tool for global reach ..as national language the importance of Latvian will NEVER BE  undermined even if English grows in popularity !!
